Award-winning Shooting Stars Theatre Company return to The White Horse this summer with a fresh and modern interpretation of Twelfth Night. This is Shooting Stars’ 6th year at The White Horse previous productions including ‘Romeo & Juliet’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and last year’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’.

Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies. A play about love in all its excess.

Twins, Viola and Sebastian, are separated in a shipwreck. Both eventually land on different shores of a country called Illyria, each one assuming the other has drowned. A young girl alone in the world, Viola decides to don male clothing and present herself to Duke Orsino, the ruler of Illyria, as a young man. Soon, under the name of Cesario, she is his most trusted servant, and is sent to woo Olivia, a countess he is madly in love with, on his behalf. Viola does her duty but in her heart realises that she herself has fallen in love with Orsino.

Olivia’s father and brother have just died and she is in mourning for seven years, during which time she will not consider romance. Through stubbornness and perseverance Viola is able to speak with Olivia, but during their conversation a twist occurs: Olivia falls in love with Viola, thinking her to be a young man, and begins to actively pursue her. Viola now finds herself stuck between the duke she loves and the countess who adores her and to whom Orsino keeps sending her back.

Meanwhile, trouble is brewing in Olivia’s household. Her drunken uncle, Sir Toby Belch, his friend Sir Andrew Aguecheek, and servants, Maria and Feste are all plotting against the uptight steward of the household, Malvolio. They convince him that Olivia is in love with him and get him to dress up and embarrass himself to prove his love for her.

With the love triangle of Orsino, Viola, and Olivia, and the mad behavior of Malvolio, the entire court-life of Illyria is in disarray. The arrival of Sebastian who bears a striking resemblance to ‘Cesario’ only adds to the farce in this much loved comedy of confused identity, cross-dressing and cross-garters!

Come and be transported from a quaint village in Dorset to the mysterious land of Illyria!
