Viennese Classical Giants
The Dorset County Orchestra Autumn Concert is at the Dorford Centre in Dorchester on Saturday 18th November 2017 at 19.30.
The orchestra welcomes Arturo Serna as conductor and solo cellist. Arturo studied cello, initially at El Sistema in Venezuela and later in France, Switzerland and the UK. He started his conducting career at Trinity College London and is an in demand conductor of orchestras in the south west; popular with both musicians and audiences for his enthusiasm and musicality.
An exciting programme of popular classical works includes:
Carl Maria von Weber’s Freishǖtz Overture an overnight sensation when first performed in Berlin in 1821.
The Haydn Cello Concerto in D Major was until 1961, the Haydn cello concerto. In 1961, a librarian at the Prague Archives discovered a set of parts for Haydn’s early C major cello concerto, and overnight the one in D became the second in a pair.
Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is the symphony that has come to represent greatness in music. One can’t easily think of another single composition that in its expressive range and structural power better represents what music is all about.
